Description:
|
|
Ground freezing was used to provide a groundwater barrier around the perimeter of a proposed open
pit gold mine. Approximately 2400 freeze and temperature monitoring pipes were installed around the
3.5 kilometer perimeter. Depths to bedrock ranged from 45 to 125 m across the site. Two permanent
refrigeration plants were constructed at the North and South end of site, containing eight 1500
horse power compressors.
The freeze system was designed to use 5000 tons of refrigeration, circulated throughout the enclosed
piping system. The design required that this system freeze and maintain the frozen earth barrier for
eight years while the excavation is completed.
During the drilling and construction process, world commodity prices dropped dramatically, postponing
the start-up of the project. The system is currently in a maintenance mode awaiting start-up.
