Description:
|
|
Construction of a 600-foot ventilation shaft required excavation support and groundwater control
for approximately 120 feet of unconsolidated water-bearing sands. An uneven zone of highly
weathered and fractured bedrock presented a difficult, if not impossible obstacle for conventional
shoring methods. Ground freezing was used for excavation support of the upper sands and
groundwater control for the top 50 feet of bedrock.
Mining requirements mandated a very tight schedule. Layne Christensen crews drilled around the clock,
seven days a week and completed the installation of the ground freezing system in less than two weeks.
A specially modified, high-powered refrigeration plant was used and formed the frozen earth wall in
three weeks.
Excavation was completed ahead of schedule, enabling mining operations to continue without previously
predicted schedule changes.
